Pre-Installed App

What is a pre-installed app?

A pre-installed app is software included on a device by the manufacturer, operating system vendor, or carrier as part of the original device image. These apps are integrated into the system build before the device reaches the end user and are available immediately upon first use, without requiring download or installation from an app store.

Pre-installed apps may provide core functionality such as device configuration, connectivity management, system utilities, or branded services. Because they are embedded in the device image, they often operate with greater trust and broader access to system resources than user-installed apps. In some cases, they cannot be removed or fully disabled by the user.

This elevated level of access makes pre-installed apps a critical security consideration, as vulnerabilities, insecure interfaces, or embedded third-party libraries can expose sensitive data or create persistent attack paths that remain present across the device lifecycle.
