Hidden App

What is a “hidden app”?

A hidden app is software present on a device that is intentionally not visible through standard user interface elements such as the app launcher, settings menus, or home screen. These apps typically run in the background and perform system-level or manufacturer-defined functions without direct user interaction. Hidden apps may be used for legitimate purposes such as device management, diagnostics, updates, or carrier services.

However, because they are not easily discoverable by users, they can also introduce significant security and privacy risks if they contain vulnerabilities or perform undisclosed data collection. Hidden apps often operate with elevated permissions or privileged access, allowing them to interact with sensitive system components, other apps, or device hardware. Their lack of visibility reduces transparency and user control, making it difficult to assess their behavior or risk. As a result, hidden apps are an important focus area for security analysis, particularly in enterprise, government, and regulated environments.
