What is Ransomware?
Ransomware is a type of malicious software (malware) designed to encrypt a victim’s files or lock them out of their systems, rendering data and critical infrastructure inaccessible until a ransom is paid—typically in cryptocurrency to preserve the attacker’s anonymity. Once deployed, ransomware spreads rapidly through a network, targeting everything from individual workstations to servers, databases, and backups. Attackers usually gain initial access through phishing emails, compromised credentials, unpatched vulnerabilities, or malicious downloads. The victim is then presented with a ransom demand, often accompanied by a deadline and the threat that files will be permanently deleted or sensitive data will be publicly leaked if payment is not made.
